James Vass M R C T K Y Photo: Born: 15 October 1841,[4151] at the home of Milton W. Fitzhugh in Culpeper County, Virginia. [NOTE:find footnote among emails, probably from what’s-his-name.] Married: “Sallie Taliaferro, wife of James Vass, August 1842–June 1878.” “Anna Digges, wife of James Vass, March 1845–July 1890.[4152] Died: 15 June 1916.[4153] Buried at the Masonic Cemetery in Culpeper. His marker is engraved, “A Faithful Member of the Black Horse Troop 4th Va Cav. 1861–1865.”[4154] Obituary: One may be found in the Culpeper Exponent, 23 June 1916.Might be found at reference.[4155] Children: “Bessie Vass, daughter of James and Sallie Vass, March 1869– January 1888” [age 18].[4156] Parents and Siblings: James was brother of George Fitzhugh Vass [BH]; see his entry for parents and siblings. Other Family: The following individuals are buried near James Vass in the Masonic Cemetery in Culpeper: “ “Our Mother”, Susan Fitzhugh, wife of S. M. Vass, born Dec. 10, 1814, died July 26, 1893.”[4157] “Rosglyn C. Vass, born June 29, 1851, died February 26, 1928.” On either side of Rosglyn are “Florence N., wife of R. C. Vass, died January 8, 1888 in her 34th year,” who was born around 1855, and “Ada Harper [Vass], wife of R. C. Vass, born July 9, 1856, died June 5, 1936.” “Florence Fitzhugh Vass/ wife of Fenton Mercer Nalle/ May 31, 1886/ January 21, 1957.” She was born during James’s second marriage, to Anna, and during Rosglyn’s first marriage, to Florence N. B, 13th Virginia Infantry. He was mustered out on 17 January 1862. “On 15 March 1862 he mustered into Co. H, 4th Virginia Cavalry. “Wounded in the ribs at Poolesville, Maryland, during the Sharpsburg/ Antietam campaign. Detailed July 1863 as scout; returned October 1863. “He was surrendered on 9 April 1865 at Appomattox Court House. “Post-war, he lived in Danville.”[4164]
