John Joseph Downman N E M V K Y Photo: Born: 5 December 1835.[1198] Married: He wed Isabella Harrison Hamilton, daughter of Janet Hall (Scott) and Hugh Hamilton,[1199] on 1 December 1859.[1200] Died: 8 April 1873[1201]; buried Fredericksburg City Cemetery.[1202] April 1873.[1203] The “notation on him [being buried at Fredericksburg City Cemetery] comes from an old typescript made from an original ledger book (since lost) containing names of people buried in the city cemetery. Beside John Joseph Downman’s name… is the notation that he was buried in 1873…. He will be in the southern half of the cemetery, which is really a separate entity though within the same wall. That is to say, he will be to your left when you enter through the main gate, which is on Washington Avenue….”[1204] Obituary: Children: “John Bartholomew, born March 5, 1861; baptisted May 29, 1861. Hugh Hamilton, born Dec. 8, 1863; baptised Feb. 26, 1864. Joseph Yates, born Oct. 15, 1866; baptised June 20, 1867. William Samuel Scott, born Nov. 10, 1868; baptisted Apr. 8, 1868. George Stanton, born Feb. 17, 1871; baptisted Apr. 8, 1871. All baptisted in the P.E. Church.”[1205] Parents and Siblings: “Son of John Bartholomew Downman of Layton’s Store, Fauquier County,… born May 9, 1793; [baptized by Reverend] David Ball; died Nov. 23, 1859; married Jan. 11, 1816, Harriet Jane Downman, daughter of Joseph Ball and Olivia (Payne) Downman, born Aug. 6, 1797; died Georgetown, D.C., Feb. 4, 1869. They lived at ‘Greenvale,’ [Lancaster County], 1816; moved 1817 to Warrenton,… and 1821 to Layton’s Store.
